Designing a Movie Poster

Tips to creating a successful Movie Poster:

1-ATTENTION:  Grabbing the attention of people passing by.  By using the film’s characters or a major plot point, designers can establish some level of plot while still gaining the attention of anyone that views the poster

2- ICONOGRAPHY-SHOWING WITHOUT TELLING:  use imagery, whether a close-up of a character or item that’s a major plot point, or a simple graphic, to establish the film’s plot. Combined with an eye-grabbing design, this can be an incredibly effective way to gain attention and create interest at once.

3- INTEREST-GIVING THE VIEWING AN INCENTIVE TO SEE THE FILM:  The incentive is that in order to resolve the situation, the person looking at the poster needs to see the film and find out what happens.

4-APPEAL-While a growing number of films now use different designs for their DVD cover than their in-theater promo posters, most of the classics and high-budget blockbusters still use the same poster for both.  Grab the attention of the marketed audience.

Each person is going to be creating  Movie poster based on the what we just went over.

Work together with 1 other person to decide what your movie poster will be for.  Is it a movie you already did in class or one you can envision creating.  The movie could be a movie you want to do in the future as well.  The other person is there to help each of you brainstorm ideas.

You will then follow the following steps to create the poster:

 Decide your movie topic.
Decide what design element appeals to you with the film at hand to focus on most.
On a piece of paper sketch out your idea
Decide what images you will need for this poster
Now create a totally different design for the same film
What is most important in this design?
 Sketch it out
Get your idea approved by Mrs. Schneid before starting in Photoshop
Each design will need a minimum of 15 layers
Now you will create both designs in Photoshop
If you get stuck on how to do something call me over and I will help you.
At the end you will be doing a presentation and short paper based on your designs to show me what you have learned and how you incorporated those elements and principles into your design.  You will share your Final products with the class to give you full credit for this assignment.

I then need to sketch out an idea for them and then show them how I would do/start it in Photoshop
