Music Video's

PART 1 - 10 point Activity due by the end of the period.  Should take you no more then 20 minutes.

Take one of the following Music videos made by former students and copy 20 seconds of their film.  Act it out and record it.  Put it together too.  I don't care about the background, as long as no one is in your background.  I am mainly concerned about your cuts and short clips and where your camera is located.  NO USING BIG CAMERAS, just the small ones or phones.  This is just a practice exercise.

PART 2 - Next I want you to decide what kind of music video you want to do.  And answer the following questions.  Jot them down on a piece of paper and I will collect them tomorrow incase you don't have time to finish this today.  Watch the following music videos too, these are good examples of what has been done in the past.

VIDEOS ARE DUE  NEXT WEDNESDAY
DECEMBER 1 4TH.  (Stay around 2 minutes)

MUSIC VIDEO EXAMPLES:

This video is amazing.  She self filmed this whole thing.  The meaning behind it is great too.  It is a personal reflection on her brother dying.  You can really see the turn around on how she is sad and then happy.  He was suffering from a severe mental illness that took his rational mind.

Love this video.  It really is a personal video about a senior who doesn't know which way to go from here and time is not on his side right now.

This video is a very fun one.  Short yet sweet.  Tells a story about a boy trying to get a girl.  Very creatively done.

Great camera work and editing here.  REally tells a story about this person.

Filmmaking

Let's get the film reals rolling!  I know this is what a lot of you have been waiting for and so have I.  We need to start with some basics:

STORYTELLING

This is THE MOST important thing when it comes to creating a movie.  If you don't have a good Story that is worth telling then you will lose your viewer and you too will lose interest.  So lets learn how to do just that.  Let's first take a look at my 6 year old son's picture of telling a story that he did in his kindergarten class last week.

SO WHAT DO YOU NEED IN A STORY:

BEGINNING
MIDDLE
END

For a High School level here is a more detailed flow chart of what your story's should include:

And now a video on tips to remember when creating a story:

PHOTOSHOP

Photoshop Practice

TUESDAY: 3 Color edits Due
WEDNESDAY: 2 Photoshop practices
THURSDAY: Watch my video below and make 1 edit of your own.  Save it as a Photoshop Document and a JPEG.  I will come around and check these on Friday. If you won't be in on Friday drop box your document with the title Thursday/last name.  If you get stuck or need help please email me @ cschneid@vermilionschools.org
FRIDAY: Work on making your own new edit from scratch.  It should have the following items in it.  I will be in class to help you on these.

Create a New Document
Name it Design/Last name

Change the size to 12 x 12
72 Resolution
Place the Anchor into your document
Change the size and rotate the anchor to be on an angle
Change the anchor's color using one of the color changes I showed you on Monday.
Turn the Anchor's opacity to 40%
Change a new background layer using the gradient tool.

Add a border on a new layer.
Add 2 text boxes.  1 that says VERMILION and the other that says SAILORS
Go into the Effects for the Font and give both text layers the following FX's.
            *Dropshadow-CHANGE the blend mode to= normal,

                                    Distance=50
                                    Spread=20
                                    Size=30
            *Stroke-Change the size to 25 and the color to yellow
            *Beveled Edges-Check Contour and change:

                                    Depth=250
                                    Size=30
                                    Soften=5
Make sure both text layers have the same FX's.  (copy and past the layer style from one to the other)

 Last I want you to bring in a person (I have senior pictures in my handouts you can use) and cut them out and paste them onto a new layer.  Then color change them and make them bigger or smaller to fit in your composition nicely.
AND LASTLY GIVE IT YOUR OWN FINAL TOUCHES

Choice Project

For this next assignment you will have the choice to do either a film or photos.  Below are the details for each assignment.

This assignment is due on March 24th.

FILM ASSIGNMENT:

Film Noir 3-5 minute film-groups of your choice-CHOOSE WISELY!

Black and white
High contrast
Music/Audio is key
Usually is a detective situation or a story of crime
Fear, mistrust, bleakness, loss of innocence, despair and paranoia are readily evident in noir

Classic film noir developed during and after World War II, taking advantage of the post-war ambience of anxiety, pessimism, and suspicion. It was a style of black and white American films that first evolved in the 1940s, became prominent in the post-war era, and lasted in a classic "Golden Age" period until about 1960.  Strictly speaking, film noir is not a genre, but rather the mood, style, point-of-view, or tone of a film. It is also helpful to realize that 'film noir' usually refers to a distinct historical period of film history.

Movie Posters

Friday 1/22/16- PDF due to me.  3 Movie poster examples-Sentence under each about what elements and principles of design you like that are successful.  At the end of those 3, write a small paragraph about what you are going to do with your 2 movie posters that you are going to design next week.

Tips to creating a successful Movie Poster:

1-ATTENTION:  Grabbing the attention of people passing by.  By using the film’s characters or a major plot point, designers can establish some level of plot while still gaining the attention of anyone that views the poster

2- ICONOGRAPHY-SHOWING WITHOUT TELLING:  use imagery, whether a close-up of a character or item that’s a major plot point, or a simple graphic, to establish the film’s plot. Combined with an eye-grabbing design, this can be an incredibly effective way to gain attention and create interest at once.

3- INTEREST-GIVING THE VIEWING AN INCENTIVE TO SEE THE FILM:  The incentive is that in order to resolve the situation, the person looking at the poster needs to see the film and find out what happens.

4-APPEAL-While a growing number of films now use different designs for their DVD cover than their in-theater promo posters, most of the classics and high-budget blockbusters still use the same poster for both.  Grab the attention of the marketed audience.

Each person is going to be creating  2 Movie poster based on the what we just went over.

Use your Children's book Movies to make your Movie Posters, unless otherwise instructed.

You will then follow the following steps to create the poster:

 Decide what design element appeals to you with the film at hand to focus on most.
 Decide what images you will need for this poster
 Now create a totally different design for the same film
 What is most important in this design?
 Sketch it out
 Get your idea approved by Mrs. Schneid before starting in Photoshop
 Each design will need a minimum of 15 layers
 Now you will create both designs in Photoshop
 If you get stuck on how to do something call me over and I will help you.
 At the end you will be doing a presentation and short paper based on your designs to show me what you have learned and how you incorporated those elements and principles into your design.  You will share your Final products with the class to give you full credit for this assignment.

I then need to sketch out an idea for them and then show them how I would do/start it in Photoshop

You Movie Posters must consist of the following:
1. Title
2. Slogan if one
3. Picture of main character(s)
4. Background picture-separate from the character pic
5. Date of Release
6. Rating
7. Credits in small writing
